Did Star Wars change your life? An official book about how the Force works.



Hi, This is Mio. Today, I would like to introduce the official Disney|Lucasfilm book about how the Force works. This is the last book I was in charge of before I left Disney Japan in April 2018.




The reason the author and I made this book is that we wanted to figure out why Star Wars was so influential. The  author was dealing with this theme for 20 years.

He analyzed all of George Lucas’ interviews that were available and studied literature and philosophy that could have influenced Star Wars. They include Buddhist Zen, and poured all his passion. We did not know whether this book would be approved or not by Lucasfilm until the whole book was finished and reviewed. Therefore the author had to write this book in his free time, usually after work. Since he was an employed writer, he was not allowed to use time in a book that was unsure to bring revenues. He kept writing this way for three years.

At the end of the first year, we brought this book proposal to Lucasfilm in San Francisco and had a meeting. Based on their feedback, the author wrote and re-wrote and re-wrote … we submitted the final draft to Lucasfilm for review, and received full approval with praise :)

This book was named as “The Jedi Philosophy”, and came out in Japan in October, 2017.




It marked #1 on Amazon Japan “Foreign Movie Books” category. Amazon users rated the book 4.6 stars (50 reviews to date), and more than 200 posts were made by readers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and personal blogs.





The readers posted on how much they were encouraged by this book, and that it made them want to see Star Wars again. I  had never seen such a huge number of posts that were made on a Star Wars book in Japan.
